@dflak not true. The approximate minimum value of the total outstanding shares of stock in a given compny is its liquidation value. That is the total amount of cash you could raise by selling everything that the company owns including realestate, inventory, furniture, etc. Market value minus liquidation value represents approximately the net present value how much profit people believe the company will make in the future. This is the part that depends on the opinions of fools. If/when market value goes below liquidation value, then someone will buy all the shares and liquidate the company.
