    In my experience, and that of a few educators I know, it’s pretty common for kids to use the words “real” and “fake” to mean “alive” and “dead”, so this kind of discussion with objects like turtle shells (or turtles inside shells) actually happens a lot.

    Those bacteria, by the way, along with fungi and even viruses, form an individual’s “microbiome”: their body’s unique internal ecosystem which is essential for proper human health.

    In some cases, the use of antibiotics can wipe out large parts of that ecosystem and cause long-term health problems, so scientists have been developing treatments to replace the microbiome through, believe it or not, fecal transplants.
