Found a website called QuoteInvestigators and lifted this:
In 1887 the Irish playwright and wit Oscar Wilde published a short story called “The Canterville Ghost”. He described one of the characters by writing
“Indeed, in many respects, she was quite English, and was an excellent example of the fact that we have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.”
Fifty years later G. B. Shaw said something very similar and today gets all the credit.

I always say Ireland is a great country to visit. They speak English there if you listen hard enough.

GBS is often credited but Oscar Wilde laid down the heart of it 50 years before. Lifted this from the website QuoteInvestigator.com
In 1887 the Irish playwright and wit Oscar Wilde published a short story called “The Canterville Ghost”. While describing one of the main characters, the narrator included a comical remark contrasting England and America that was similar to the saying under examination.
“Indeed, in many respects, she was quite English, and was an excellent example of the fact that we have really everything in common with America nowadays, except, of course, language.”

Looks like JJ has been peeking again because that could be my Janis sitting there, asking those questions. And that’s me playing Arlo, just as long as I have the Captions on. Now, just why can’t Janis see them?

Like your Dad I also have a few kids, (15), but only one in uniform, a daughter. Toys were handed down over and over and over again. They needed regular repairs. Long ago I learned the first rule of successful tinkering, when you take anything apart save all the pieces. They still are sure I can fix anything.

I myself have three somethings like that. Two on my dresser, one for change and another for the odds and ends. Third is in the bathroom for my razor.

Not exactly up there with your Mother’s Wilma necklace but, yes, Fathers are most always the worst to shop for. If there was something we liked we would most likely have two of them already, or even a third one we forgot about.
It would appear Janis has some things that need doing before attending to what Arlo considers her mistletoe duty.
