    Of course. These are a function of time. We are not taught to admire the Visigoths, begrudgingly admire Genghis Kahn for his willingness to offer leaders of communities who joined him and brutally slaughtering those who did not while leveling their communities. Alexander the Great was not mentioned, though “the Great” in his name demonstrates our admiration.

    American history classes I took (yes, many years ago) glorified both the very violent Roman and Spartan cultures. Watching people slaughter each other for dinner party entertainment (Roman) and cultivating aggression while denying any form of comfort (Spartan): these were our “manly” role models. Of course supplicant women were/are much admired as well.

    Not mutually exclusive. In fact, one could argue that the “mass violence” against blacks is another form of mass violence, only it has been more spread out over geography and time.
