St. Peter is considered the first Pope. The succession of Popes goes back to Christ himself, who appointed Peter as head of the earthly church, but the term “pope” (which means father) was not used until much later; a Google search says since about the 9th century.
We are supposed to honor & respect our parents, even if they seemingly do not deserve it, just like we should respect people in power because of the office they hold, as all power & authority comes from God. Even if they’re bad at it, they are sharing in that authority and we’re supposed to honor them based on their position. It isn’t always easy.
