Afghanistan is just like Iraq. It has nothing to do with terrorism, democracy or even 9/11. It’s about oil. And we’re in Afghanistan because of geography. We don’t want a pipeline following the Silk Road through Iran, into Afghanistan and on into China. China has a small border with Afghanistan which would make a lovely place through which to pour oil.
George Bush needed an excuse to invade Afghanistan and the Taliban gave it to him. We’re never going to give that up, now that we’re there.
We’ve been in Korea since 1950, and before that, Germany. No one asks when we’re ever leaving those two nations. No one asks when we’re leaving Bosnia or Kosovo. Sooner or later it’ll be no questions asked. We’ll have permanent training areas, barracks and a super-huge PX for all our NATO allies shopping needs just outside of Baghdad and Kabul.
