It is a sad observation of our time, that majoring in a liberal education is held in lower esteem by employers. The Arts, Literature, Philosophy, Poetry, Languages, History; proficiency in these areas may broaden one’s outlook on life, help you become a better person and contribute to making a more dynamic society. But as technology advances so rapidly, employers demand skills in several computer languages AND previous experience in their particular field, be it medical, financial or manufacturing. Businesses today are designed to be run by pre-programmed computers and rigid policies. Middle-management has disappeared. Any decision-making is made by the top management. Any deviation from company policies is grounds for dismissal. We now live in the age of technocrats. Adapt, or die.
I apologize with starting the day so gloomily, but this is what I have observed happening the past twenty years.
