Student: (Five pages of reading a week? What have I let myself in for?) Professor: Before we begin, a few observations about the state of education in America...When I first designed this history course some 20 years ago, I assigned my students 17 books, seven of them lengthy...The course was oversubscribed. Some 300 students signed up for it. Ten years later, only nine of those books were still required! And yet fewer than 110 students felt up to the challenge! Of those, 30 dropped out because of the "workload"! Today, as you have no doubt noticed, only three books - each of them under 200 pages - remain on the list! Three! So what does this say about.... Student: Three? Whoa! Time out!
