By the way, I don’t expect that this will change anybody’s mind, but the girl/woman later brought a civil suit against Polanski, and prevailed. A monetary judgment was awarded, and at least partially satisfied (there’s apparently record of one missed or late payment, but it’s unclear whether it was later made good). (Source: wikipedia, for what it’s worth.) Yes, it’s “blood-money” of a sort, but it counts. There may be questions of double jeopardy involved.
There’s no perfect justice in this world, only the approximation we call the Law. The legalities of this are thorny.
In my job, I’ve worked on a couple of death penalty appeals. With the nature of the process, it can take many, many years for a convict to pass from the sentencing dock to the death chamber. In one case I’m familiar with, we have a mild, thoughtful man in his 50’s who is facing execution for the actions of a crazy man in his 20’s. These two men share a name and genetic identity, but they are not the same man. Rehabilitation is possible. People change.
