Actually, Republicans (and their judicial appointees) WERE aiming for in vitro fertilization (IVF). Numerous religious conservatives have called for it to be outlawed and have voted down or otherwise obstructed Democratic proposals to enshrine protections into law.
The Republicans just started backpedaling as fast as they could when they saw the enormous backlash which, on top of the unpopularity of outlawing women’s rights to make their own choices about pregnancy, could cost them the House and also keep the Senate and White House in Democratic hands. So now they are saying they will protect IVF, but even after the Alabama Supreme Court, in an opinion steeped in unconstitutional religious justifications, effectively outlawed IVF, they have continued to block proposals that would do exactly that.
As Rachel Maddow so often says, “Watch what they DO, not what they SAY.”
And it isn’t just IVF. Even medical or mechanical means of birth control are on the chopping block, and they have even blocked proposals that would protect some of the most common forms of birth control, including hormonal treatments (the Pill) or IUDs.
