I just feel like sports games have been adopting more and more RPG elements these days. One famous basketball game has an entire narrative component with characters and everything. You play a kid trying to go pro and deal with your family, friends, scouts, etc. Theres high budget voice acting and everything. I remember when it was just shooting the ball and picking from pixelated versions of your favorite NBA players.
