I read an article many years ago about why some people never get a head. The woman who wrote it was broke/poor. She received a fair amount f money, probably as a gift rather than an inheritance, and spent it. Her attitude was “I’m broke, but now that I have some money I can get that cut-glass motorcycle I’ve been wanting, and a new . . .” until there was nothing left. Later – the basis of the article – she looked around and realized that other people who were in the same boat did the same thing.
After reading it, I thought about how things had been when I was married to the Late and Unlamented. I was always behind in what I needed for myself or the girls that any bit of extra cash flew out the window the second it came in.
