Baldo by Hector D. Cantú and Carlos Castellanos for July 25, 2002
Transcript:
Gracie: Ah...you would expect me to oppose the stereo-types perpetuated by Speedy Gonzales! But by embracing Speedy, I seize ownership of the image, thus rendering ineffective the message and the subsequent torrent of negative icons. Television: On the heels of Speedy Gonzales' triumphant return, we're bringing back the frito bandito! Speedy Gonzales: Dees ees a steeek up...geev mee all yor cheeps! Baldo: When you embrace the bandito there, make sure you get me some free chips.
What I don’t understand about the Speedy González controversy is: he is the good guy, the one who always wins and is victorious against the cat. So, why wouldn’t anybody be represented by an stereotype that always gets the prize?
