Looking back, Raoul hasn’t been that big of a jerk. Mona said that he said that she was dumb, after she asked for help with her science homework, but she may be an unreliable reporter, and it certainly didn’t stop her from continuing her campaign to win him at the time.
Raoul’s biggest crime has been that he was more interested in the overtly “womanly” and flirtatious girls around him than in the tongue-tied, skinny kid. That may be less than enlightened of him, but it’s hardly uncommon in teenage boys (my understanding is that teenage girls are not guiltless of similar preferences)…
It’s never pleasant when someone you’re attracted to isn’t attracted to you back, but it’s kind of a universal experience. Who knows? There may have been some awkward, gawky boy who had been pining after Mona all this time, to whom she wouldn’t give the time of day.
In the words of XTC, “People will always be tempted to wipe their feet on anything with ‘Welcome’ written on it.”
