It would be very instructive to look back in history to the death knell of the Whig Party in the 1850s which produced the current republican party – it also produced the semi-terrorist party known, colloquially, as the "Know-Nothing party.
Oh, and please, also note that some historians link the death of the Whig party and the American Civil War. I mention this only because I’m hearing from some areas (Texas in particular) that the winning of both seats by democrats will lead to armed insurrection of some kind in this country.
