Alice: Oh boy! Cookies! Mom: Grandma made these and sent them over. Mom: They're a little chewy. Petey: They're not so much chewy as inedible. Petey: They're from the same for group as fruitcake. Alice: Petey! Grandma put a lot of love into these! Petey: Also a lot of molasses, glue and road tar. Alice: Ooh! Can I have one?
Sounds like the Lebkuchen my mom would make. (Minus the glue and tar… you can’t have everything.) She told us Lebkuchen meant “Love cooking.” I’ve looked it up and found that’s not one of the accepted interpretations of the name, but it’s the one I like. It smells like it, too.
