Ernesto: Ah, Peter! What brings you to this remote corner of the library? Petey: Ernesto? What are you doing? Ernesto: I'm spending the summer at the library, as is my wont, in a refuge of solitude constructed of desks and chairs and study carrels. This is my finest one yet! Ernesto: It's not quite the refurbished extinct volcano of my dreams, but it's a splendid base of operations. Petey: I went to Cartoon Camp! Ernesto: Ha ha! Did they spell it "KARTOON KAMP" in the brochure? Not to mock the Arts, of course, but ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Petey: It's a- Ernesto: Well, busy busy busy. I'll see you soon, I'm sure! Petey: Yeah, um. Okay! Mom: "Calming the Overactive Imagination." "Get a Grip on Your Imagination." "Seperating Fact from Fantasy." Are you going to read all these? Petey: Over and over.
The thing is, Petey himself doesn’t know for sure if Ernesto is real or imaginary. He can’t comprehend how someone like him could exist, so he believes he is making him up. Petey doesn’t really want anyone having yet another reason to believe that his mind is over-active.
