“Neither a borrower nor a lender be, For loan oft loses both itself and friend”… says Polonius
Good advice… hard to follow… mostly the lender part, cos I hate borrowing anyway.
There are a few, a very few, people to whom I would lend whatever I could, knowing I’d get it back right away….
and in fact they’re the ones I’d give money to, if I could, in a time of need…. and even though they probably wouldn’t ask.
They’d do it for me… and when it comes to ten or twenty dollars, sometimes we don’t even keep track.
I also know a few perpetual sinkholes, actually I can think of three, offhand… friends or relatives, always broke, bad with money…
whom I usually allow to borrow and repay, borrow and repay, the same ten or twenty dollars…
an arbitrary amount I feel like I could live with losing, for friendship sake.
They know not to try to borrow more when they still owe me some….
and I try to just shrug my shoulders, when they show me some foolish extravagances they bought, instead of paying me back.
As for borrowing…..
I don’t have much… but if I owe anybody money, for any reason, I’m compulsive about repaying it as soon as possible.
As for Elliot… I don’t think he or Peter ever thought there was any notion of repayment in his request.
BTW…. when I was a kid in the Midwest, we said “Can ya borrow me fifty cents?”
So the one word sufficed for both.
It must be regional…. haven’t heard it in years.
