When I was still on the force, we would have nights where groups would go around, ransacking unlocked cars for valuables. Phones, GPSs, money. I took one report, and the guys keys were in the car. He said “I always leave them in there. It’s such a small town.” I was like “They could have taken your car too!” I turned the report over to the investigator, when he went to take prints… the keys were still in it! Another family had their brand new Jeep stolen the dya they brought it home because they left they keys in it. The thief took it four wheeling through corn fields and off road.
One more: A resident kept getting parking tickets for being on the street overnight. He SWORE he had parked in his driveway. He finally set a trap, and caught a guy who worked for a repair shop who had made a copy of his key. He would roll the car down the driveway, joy ride all night, and then leave it on the street because he didn’t want the guy to hear him pulling in the driveway!
