On the night before Christmas Eve 1974, my mom and I arrived home after dark. We were startled by a small black and white critter that scampered across the porch and into the bushes. At first we thought it was a baby skunk, so we hurried into the house.
Shortly thereafter, we heard scratching sounds on the wooden storm door and two little green eyes looked through the glass at the top of the door inside front door. Then we heard very loud kitten mewing. We opened the door to discover a teeny, tiny tuxedo kitten. The last of our Siamese cats had crossed the rainbow bridge in November, and we didn’t think we were ready for a new cat yet, but what are you going to do when an adorable kitten is on your porch demanding to come in out of the cold?
We were going to take her to the shelter after Christmas, but then I came down with the flu on Christmas Eve. The itty bitty kitty snuggled up under my chin and only left my side to eat or use her litter box. By the time I was well, Miss Kitty had insinuated herself into my heart. She was with me for 19 years. Where she came from we never found out. Maybe she fell off Santa’s sleigh! Best Christmas present EVER!
