For the first 5 years of their marriage and the first 3 years of my life, my parents lived in an apartment without a water heater. The apartment was over the carriage house of a larger home that had been divided into apartments. The main house had a water heater, and my mom was allowed to use the wringer washer and galvanized rinse tubs in the basement of the main house. Since I was little, she would give me a bath in one of the galvanized rinse tubs. Mom and Dad had to go to her sister’s house to take their weekly baths. She had to heat water in a large kettle for in between sponge baths and for dad’s morning shave. Also to wash the dishes. (It took awhile for the housing shortage to ease up after the end of WWII.)
