Walter Conkrite: Tonight's comment is by Roger Mudd. Roger: Thank you, Walter. I don't have much to say tonight. As usual, the world's gotten worse, and I'm stuck with reporting it...Do you think I enjoy bringing you news of war, famine, disease and tragedy? Do you think I like depressing the entire nation? Because I don't! I hate it!! Walter: Thank you, Roger. And that's the way it is Monday, Sept. 20.
Roger Mudd was a correspondent for CBS news. Around this time he rumored to be succeeding Walter Cronkite as head anchor, but Dan Rather got the job instead. Mudd may be cranky because of that.
