Man: Mr. Kissinger, as you know, many people are concerned about Governor Reagan's lack of sophistication in foreign affairs. If you were appointed Secretary of State, would you be able to adapt to Mr. Reagan's tendency to reduce extremely complex internationl issues to a series of applause lines? Kissinger: Of course. In fact, I think one-liners can be very useful in the conduct of foreign policy. Man: Could you give us an example, sir? Kissinger: "I paid for this microphone, Mr. Brezhnev..." Man: Sir, will you be trying to get goverment off the backs of the poles?
It’s that 2nd punchline I like, with historical perspective. Garry’s pretty bright, but he certainly underestimated Reagan.
