Person: Yes, Mr. President? Ronald Reagan: Could you hold all calls, please? I'm going to think about the unthinkable. Person: Yes, Mr. President? Ronald: I'm finished. Jim, what's all this talk about my arms control. Negotiations battling for my soul? Jim: Well, sir there are getting to be rather sharp divisions between the moderates and the hard-liners. It would be helpful if everyone knew where you stood. Ronald: What are the two positions? Jim: Well, on one side there are those who favor proposing terms so unreasonable that the Soviets can't possibly accept them. Ronald: I like that approach. What's the other side? Jim: The other side thinks we should abandon all pretense of wanting an agreement. Ronald: Gosh...that's an attractive option, too....do I have to decide right away? Jim: Oh no, sir. You've got four more years.
