I see no contradiction (yet). No reason that the widow Doonesbury can’t be on a road trip with her biker boyfriend. Probably just helping Alex find some crash space with the gang. Alex could well follow in JJ’s footsteps here – hooking up with a decent guy her first time around. Then later on dumping him to party with a loser. It would be sad, but typical of the daughter growing up to be the mother.
