Peter: Hey, Mom, what's for dinner? Andy: Spaghetti. Peter: What'sthe weather supposed to be like tomorrow? Andy: Cold. Peter: What's the dominant theme of "The Red Badge of Courage," and what literary devices does the author employ to convey it, citing specific passages from the text and limiting your answer to between 500 and 600 words? Can't blame me for trying. Andy: Oh, yes I can.
I used to wonder why my teachers never had something from the original author to state the answers to these questions. It seemed that the “answers” were only those opinions the teacher held. Whatever happened to “it means what it says?” And the authors they pick are always dead so no one can prove them wrong.
