The joke would have been funny a year ago. But speaking as a food writer from New Orleans, I’m disappointed to see this cartoon. Through and after the BP spill, not one single piece of Louisiana seafood has ever turned up contaminated in any restaurant or store anywhere in the world. That cannot be said of seafood from anywhere else. Louisiana seafood is the most inspected you can buy. A recent massive test showed it as pristine. Yet 70 percent of Americans think it’s poisoned–thanks to jokes like this. Result: fishermen and distributors are in dire straits, sitting on better shrimp and fish than you probably ever eat. Please… no more of this.
