I still feel a bit confused by this strip. I started reading it since Barajas took over the writings, with no background on it. I feel motivated to do that with strips I haven’t read ever since Terry Beatty took over the writings on Rex Morgan M.D. and is doing an amazing job on the strip.
There’s one thing that makes me want to come back to read a strip every day: focus. After Terry took over the writings, he solved the plots left unresolved by previous writer Woody Wilson and then decided to focus on one thing at a time, meaning no more multiple storylines going around. That’s a good thing for a comic strip for a simple reason: since it’s a daily thing, we can easily forget what happened last week. I know we have the options to read the strips, but that isn’t allowed everywhere — take Comics Kingdom as an example. A strip I’ve been criticizing lately for doing the opposite is Judge Parker: there are times I have no idea of what’s going on, since we read a thing today and tomorrow is a totally different thing and there are times we don’t even see a conclusion of what we read today.
I don’t know if that has always been a thing on Gil Thorp — many plots going on at the same time —, but I look forward for Barajas to finish anything left by the previous writer — Neal Rubin, according to Wikipedia — and start to focus on single storylines to develop.
By the way, can someone give me a simple list of the storylines going on?
Ah, yeah, before I forget, I read a comment about Thorp being “treated as a weak character” since Barajas took over — and that he has always been the “perfect guy” on the strip — and I think that Barajas is doing a great job if he wants to explore Thorp’s fears and weaknesses. If that has never happened before, it’s time to do it so we can see more of the main character and how he feels about the world around him and about himself.
So, yeah, keep it up, Barajas! Here’s hoping for an amazing run with you on the strip.
