As I have mentioned before, Mr Canehard’s name reminds me of a Mr Thrashbottom who was headmaster to a boy named Faceache in a UK comic called Buster which I read in the 1970s.
Faceache was a tubby little boy who could change his shape and usually changed into horrific-looking characters which is where his name Faceache came from. He could also change into someone else’s exact double and impersonate them. His form master was called Mr Snipe and this may have inspired the name of Professor Snape in the Harry Potter books as J K Rowling was born in 1965 – the year before I was born.
One very good Faceache story arc had Faceache getting permission to go from Belmonte Boarding School to the beach but Mr Snipe was rightly suspicious that Faceache would be tempted to “scrunge” and frighten people so he followed Faceache to the beach – without permission. Mr Snipe ended up falling into mud and seaweed and being mistaken for the monster that Faceache had impersonated. He was put on display by a carnival owner. Faceache called Mr Thrashbottom to come and rescue Snipe. Thrashbottom was furious at Snipe for leaving school without permission and even angrier when he heard Snipe’s explanation:
Snipe: I came here because I was afraid Faceache would be frightening people.
Thrashbottom: What!? You’re the one who’s frightening people! I don’t suppose you’re doing it for nothing either. How much are they paying you?
