A group of Asian students brought a lawsuit against Harvard University because they were denied admission, even though members of other ethnic groups with lower scores (SAT, High School GPA, etc.) had been admitted. Harvard claims that taking non-academic criteria (such as ethnicity) into account in the decision algorithm is important because otherwise, the University would become increasingly homogeneous with regard to ethnicity.
This has increasingly become a cause célèbre among conservatives because their anti-affirmative action position concords with that of the Asian students who filed the lawsuit. Trump’s Justice Department has come out in support of the Asian Applicants.
It should be interesting to see how this plays out politically, because arguably, Trump’s base would not be particularly interested in equity for a members minority group who are applying to an elite institution.
