In fact, they are the very epitome of privilege: They can easily choose where to live, they have friends who help them financially… and there’s plenty of start-up capital; there’s no shortage of any real necessity (except maybe family approval). I listened in on the first Oprah interview (Spouse wanted to see it, and I watched enough to get interested). Seems to me that they got sideways with the “establishment” which includes both the royal family AND the tabloids when they (gasp) committed the impropriety of marrying each other: People who were not of their own race.
I do think that their emotional troubles are real, but the very fact that Oprah is talking to them explains all you need to know about how privileged they are. There are indeed hundreds… thousands… of couples with much the same set of difficulties. It’s also true that in this case, they’re paying for this particular privilege, both by airing their laundry in public and by being an example of how things need to change… and how they can get better.
