I am happy for anyone who had a wonderful, loving mother and hope you enjoy celebrating her. That said, as the child of a toxic narcissist (who, among other things, tried to ruin my marriage from day one because she thought I married “beneath me” until she mercifully passed 14 months later), I want to speak for those who don’t find this to be a day of celebration. As usual tomorrow, I will say a prayer for my mom and put a post of love on Facebook for friends who also had toxic mothers and who find the day painful. Then, I’ll enjoy the day with my husband of more than 35 years who became a very successful engineer despite the fact that he got his college degree at night on the “9-year plan.” Oh, and I’ll get a nice card from our cat.
And somewhere up there, I know that my dad will still be needling my mother about the fellow physician from our church with whom she tried to arrange a marriage for me – who lost his license for overprescribing opioids – to his own addicted kid…
