Granted, he was there as a “journalist”, but at least Al Gore enlisted in the Army, and served in Viet Nam. Even with HIS political connections, he felt if he didn’t go, someone else would have to. HE didn’t join the Guard, desert, and get an “early out” six months before his term was intended to end, and he wasn’t an “officer” who shunned his duty.
As to student deferment, there IS a difference between getting five while getting busted drunk in the states, and having a Rhodes scholarship at Oxford.
