One of the problems with our system is that political parties priorities are on raising cash first, and everything else after that.
Allowing electioneering to start so far in advance simply encourages more of the same focus on raising money, because it is expensive to advertise.
The Supreme Court decision that corporations were people too! also made the situation worse.
The Democrats had Bill & Hillary raising tons of cash for the party. So Hillary had to be their candidate in spite of much disaffection from the public. That’s why Bernie never had a chance with the party.
But Hillary’s baggage (even ignoring the crap the R’s kept slinging) was too great to overcome. Being cozy with bankers is never something that will get you the popular vote. (Trump obviously has problems with bankers, so that was a plus for him, even if it was a sign of poor business skills. Which is true of far too many Americans)
Election reform is badly needed in this country. And no, I am not talking about doing away with the electoral college, as crazy as that can be. There will always be support for something like that from low population states. So concentrate on what can be done.
