Witch hunt? For a witch hunt, Jack Smith is certainly finding a lot of smoking broomsticks.
Trump knowingly and illegally retained documents (including nuclear secrets that even a president does not have singular power to declassify), intentionally hid them from investigating authorities and even his own attorneys, showed them to others, put sources and methods (including embedded human assets) at risk.
Trump is charged with multiple counts of very serious national security felonies under the Espionage Act. And really, storing documents in, among other places, bedrooms and bathrooms? That’s straight outta “Bed, Bath and BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT”?
And that is only for the documents case and obstruction of justice in Florida. The January 6 insurrection charges in Washington DC are yet to come, plus the election tampering case in Georgia.
Jack Smith, who has spent the years prior to this new assignment out of the country where his previous assignment was at the World Court at The Hague prosecuting international war criminals, is well known for being utterly apolitical. Of course Trump, who famously just makes up “facts” that he pulls out of his rear end, is going to accuse him of being a partisan, but Smith is simply a non-political figure. Most of those who know him do not even know what his party affiliation is, or if he even has any party affiliation. Jack Smith prosecuted Democrat John Edwards while Edwards was running for president; legitimate news outlets (excluding right-wing extremist hate-media) have reported the extent to which Smith has prosecuted a number of elected Democrats.
