Maybe we should take the advice security experts have been giving us since Columbine.
Locked doors. Metal detectors. Armed door guards. Ideally an armed security officer for every 1000 students, 1 per floor.
It really is that simple. Every one of the these recent incidents would have been prevented or at least minimized if all the kids (and adults) went through simple metal detectors at the door.
Local governments of all types and sizes, all political persuasions, have rejected this idea for nearly 20 years. Too expensive is the usual answer. Too intrusive. Make the school like prisons. Blah blah blah.
Well, the guns aren’t going away. Not now, not for a long time. Not ever if the SCOTUS remains true to the BoR. You don’t have to stop lobbying for that to change, but while doing it you can’t keep your head buried in the sand. The problem is here NOW.
Most of these cities and towns manage to find money for all sorts of non-essential things, but they can’t break loose a couple hundred thousand a year to pay for security for the kids. Sure, keep on pushing for gun restrictions, but you had darned well better spend some effort on getting your local school boards to cough up money for security NOW!
