The Founders envisioned a strong, solid tree with three main branches to balance each other and keep each other in check. Checks and balances.
When the Founders met to replace the weak, failed, decentralized Articles of Confederation with a unified, strong, supreme FEDERAL government (with reservations of rights to the states and citizens), they sought to establish a Constitutional democratic republic.
Nothing of its kind had ever existed before on a national scale. Greeks had democracy (and invented the term), but only in city-states, not on a national scale.
The Founders did not anticipate or envision the rise of political parties. They recognized the possibility of corrupt or treacherous leaders, and created safeguards to limit and rein in their power, but did not anticipate that partisan corruption would become so widespread that all three branches of government, bought by corporations (which the Founders did anticipate and, contrary to today’s TrumpubliCONs, overtly opposed), that they would conspire together to obstruct the mechanisms that the checks and balances were designed to prevent.
