My brothers all had a bunch of marbles, but they never played for “keeps”. I was weird. I had ONE marble, which I found one day – a sort of frosty white marble with what looked sort of like an air bubble in it. It made me think of a cotton ball inside, which made me think somehow of the cotton gin (something we had just learned about in school) and it’s inventor, Eli Whitney. So I named my marble Eli Whitney (that’s why I say I was weird – who names their marbles?). I still have that marble and it’s just possible that marble helped me to remember the name of the man who invented the cotton gin.
