Not sure about then, but in a modern context, this is actually a brilliant commentary about how people freak out over germs, especially people handling food with their bare hands. While it is usually a health board regulation in most places in America that finished food (ie food that won’t be further cooked) must be handled with gloves, that’s just a knee jerk reaction that makes people feel better, it doesn’t actually equate to food safety. A guy who wears one pair of gloves the whole day never changing them, even after using the restroom (which I’ve seen), is infinitely more of a health risk than someone touching with their properly washed bare hands. And yet the latter is a health code violation, and would gross people out. And in the former case, people would see he’s wearing gloves and think they’re safe…
