Just curious, has anyone here experienced a tummy ache from eating too much Halloween candy?
Back in the middle of the last century, sugar was the natural diet of my childhood. I would usually polish off a good portion of my haul in good order with no problem, not to mention all the other penny candy jags during the year.
Even as a kid I wondered if 1. It was an old wives tale just meant to teach kids moderation, or 2. Did earlier candies have more volatile ingredients, like castor oil or carbolic acid, that wasn’t good to take in too large a quantity, or 3. Were folks handing out more fresh type things, like apples or cookies, that could have been spoiled or poorly prepared, so that “tummy ache” was really food poisoning?
Just curious. I’ve yet to find a victim of a memorable, “Halloween tummy ache.” Sugar crash maybe, but not gastric symptoms.
Oh, and for the curious, even with the penny candy and Hostess Twinkie diet (you may gather I had limited adult supervision) and I indulge more than other folks my age, I still a normal BMI and no diabetes, yet.
