One night, when my younger daughter was about 5, I was giving her a bath. She was standing in the tub, when she just started saying a little poem, making it up right on the spot, her foot tapping out the rhythm. I asked her if she could remember it, and she said yes. I rushed the rest of her bath, wrapped her in a big towel, brought her over to my computer, and asked her to say it again: “Sunny yellow / Cloudy grey / Rainy dark / Snowy light / All the colors, black and white / Every color of the weather / They go all the time together”
