King George III was, certifiably, insane – and ultimately relieved of ruling by the then Prince of Wales issuing in the “Regency” until the dottering old man died. Had the British Parliament opposed many of the King’s edicts concerning the colonies (and many members of that body did oppose most of his policies), we might still to this day be a part of the British Empire. Just goes to show what an unchallenged despot can do when even loyal opposition fails to act.
