Jan, your bio bit reminded me of my mother who was left with 4 and 9 year old sons when her husband divorced her. We had to move into her mother’s house where I lived until drafted into the Army. Mom worked hard to support us. $5 per month per child support from her ex rarely arrived. She never got alimony.
In World War II gasoline was rationed as were many other items, meat being one of them. You needed coupons to get gas. I think they were 1, 2, and 5 gallon coupons with a monthly limit of amount of gasoline you could buy.
