Don’t pay them. Tell them if they want to eat, or have a bed to sleep in, or even watch TV, they have to pitch in and clean the house. Worked for me with 5 kids.
My dad lived in the city. A street light was just outside his living room window, so he had his chair placed next to this window. He could read the daily paper using the street light. Saved money on his electric bill. Frugal times in the depression (30’s)
Read the book: “Animal, Vegetable and Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver. Told about how her family decided to live off the land for a year, and how that worked out.
Took LOTS of planning, but the food was the best they had ever tasted. A good read.
I still listen to classical music on my Bose radio. Great sound, and it gives me an excuse to just sit and listen, taking a relaxing break from housework.
