If you are talking about “My kingdom for a new punch line,” that is a parody of a famous quote from Shakespeare’s King Richard III. In explanation of the actual quote, King Richard III was in battle when his horse was shot from underneath him behind enemy lines. Suffice to say, he was killed, after saying that famous quote. He was saying that he would give up his power to make it out of there alive.
Jon’s actual line of reasoning behind reverse psychology (in this case) lies behind Garfield’s tendency to break rules. See, if it is a rule that he has to scratch up the sofa, then by not scratching it he will be breaking the rules.
