Most repairs of that type of device involve a thorough cleaning of the playback heads and replacement of the drive belts. The difficulty is finding drive belts that have not become brittle with age. I have a few older (1995) vintage VCRs and my repair work has been just replacing drive belts and the occasional cleaning.
