Red: I heard a good joke coming home on the bus! What breed of dog does count dracula have? Rover: That's easy- A Transylvanian hound- it's an ancient Hungarian dog breed primarily used for hunting.
Also called a Hungarian Scent Hound. Nearly extinct in the 1960s. It was a central Asian dog breed that came with the Magyar tribes in the 9th Century, and breed with local breeds including the Polish Hound.
Originally bred to hunt game (fox, boar, deer, stag and lynx). The breed was refined for the Carpathian Mountains, (forests, meadows and rivers) and can hunt in all four seasons and over various terrains.
Modern day there are two varieties, the “long legged” for hunting bigger game like deer, and stag; and the “short legged” for burrowing game like hare and fox.
The breed is extremely loyal and friendly. They are very good natured and well mannered with both people and other dogs. They form strong attachments to their owners and are very protective of family members. It is very protective of its immediate territory (i.e. owners’ house and yard), and will appear very ferocious with an intimidating bark and growl towards strangers; however, it will immediately accept anyone who is invited into the area by its owners. They enjoy constant companionship and tend to remain in the presence of their owners. They have an excellent sense of direction.
