The real issue is that the medical profession has refused to participate in execution. So you have goobers and amateurs mucking about in state sponsored murder.
The state gets it wrong so often in both capital and non capital cases (witness the exonerations from DNA evidence) that it is time to rein in the prosecutorial class at every level of government. All they want are notches on their belt. Capital punishment is just one outcome. While we are at it, we could tamp down the militarism in policing as well. They don’t need to dress and act as though they are an occupying power, for goodness sakes.
Oh, and capital punishment is not a deterrent to other murderers. It’s more of a confirmation of the brutality and uncivilized impulse of Americans’ thirst for vengeance. We are a bloodthirsty people. (Not at all Christian, by the way, for all you right wing religious nuts out there who claim to be followers of Jesus.)
