Virgil “VIP” Partch was a regular cartoon factory (his design work can be clearly discerned in DUCK PIMPLES, a Donald Duck cartoon). His years of zany work eventually landed him a Sunday strip, which was maybe more down to earth than some of us expected of him.
Anyway, as many do, Partch passed on, but his work continued in the Sunday pages for a year or so because he’d been so far ahead of his deadlines.
Fun fact: Partch claimed it was in reaction to his Disney years, when he had to draw four-fingered hands, that he liked to put extra fingers on the hands he drew. Sometimes he put several.
