I understand the outrage, but I don’t understand the outrage. First, we had slavery. Then we had Jim Crow. Now we have prison. I’m not trying to be flippant here. The system has been designed, following a set of rules as clear and obvious as the ones you’d use to bake a cake or get ready in the morning. And that system has functioned to near perfection for decades and decades and decades. The purpose of the exercise, as practiced by the rich whites who control this country and have since the era of the Colonials breaking from Mother England, is to keep the separate groups squabbling over petty nothings while the Landowners (Rich and White) continue to go to the bank. Prison reform? Will never happen. Why? Look to your history texts and newspapers. Some of the groups screaming the loudest for Rockefeller Laws were the “leaders” of within the black community. And let’s not forget the grifters in that community who, because they too were black, could never, not in a hundred bazillion years, throw other black people under the bus to advance themselves. Those “leaders” will be sure to talk a good game and, in the back-room deals, make sure that the politicians understand, it will never happen. The politicians agree. How many people does the prison system employ? You’re talking massive economic disruption if the prisons empty out. But let’s stay in the Pretend Land of Prison Reform. Congrats. All drug crimes are gone. I will predict a rise in black-on-cop (the cop will, in a surprising show of diversity, be white, black, Asian, Hispanic, transgendered, in a wheelchair — just a marvelous display of the wonderful diversity within the Blue Community) assault rates that exactly corresponds to the amount necessary to refill the prisons. The system doesn’t just work; it can’t be stopped. Not by a bunch of rubes like the voters.
